19th NAM Summit Held

2024.1.23.

The 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) took place in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, on Jan. 19 and 20.

It was attended by heads of state and government and high-ranking delegations from 120 member states of NAM, including a DPRK delegation headed by Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong, a special envoy of the DPRK government, and delegates from observer states and representatives of international and regional organizations.

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, chairman of the summit, made an opening address to be followed by speeches by heads of delegations from different countries.

The head of the DPRK delegation said in a speech that during the past 60 years since its founding, the NAM has left a clear trace in history as the symbol of friendship and prosperity and the banner of cooperation and struggle for the world progressives who love justice and peace.

Referring to the stand of the DPRK government for strengthening the NAM, he further said:

President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il paid deep attention to the NAM from early years and dedicated themselves to the strengthening and development of the Movement and to the cause of global independence till the last moments of their lifetime.

Their ideas and exploits for strengthening the Movement are now being firmly carried on by Comrade Kim Jong Un, president of the State Affairs of the DPRK.

History has long advanced with a change of the century since the establishment of the Movement. However, the international arena is still rife with high-handed and arbitrary practices based on the logic of power while sovereignty and rights to existence of NAM member states continue to be gravely infringed upon.

Such phenomena that the rights to independence, existence and development of a sovereign state are exposed to grave threat are intensively revealed in the Korean peninsula.

The DPRK’s steps to boost its self-defensive military strength are a just exercise of its sovereign rights to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state and control the situation in a stable way to tackle the unstable security environment of the region caused by the dangerous military moves by the U.S. and its allies.

The DPRK’s efforts to champion its sovereign rights totally conform with the idea of NAM on resolutely opposing all sorts of violation of sovereignty and interference, and serve as a contribution to the development of NAM as well as global peace and security.

He stressed that the DPRK government will as ever attach continuous importance to boosting the role of NAM for establishing new international order based on independence and justice according to its foreign policy idea of independence, peace and friendship and will make every effort to develop NAM.

Final document of the summit, "Kampala Declaration", etc. were adopted at the summit.
