New Species of Fruit Trees Bred in DPRK

Economy 2024.12.12.

The Institute of Pomiculture under the Academy of Agricultural Science in the DPRK has made achievements in the work to propagate high-yielding fruit trees.

Officials and researchers of the institute bred many high-yielding fruit trees, including apple, pear, peach and apricot trees, and sent them to different parts of the country in recent years.

Among the fruit trees of high-yielding species are fast-ripening (ten day faster than existing ones) apple and apricot trees bearing big fruits with higher sugar content, and a plum tree highly resistant to cold and an ornamental peach tree with red leaves.

There are also high-yielding chestnut, hazelnut and other fruit trees to be cultivated in mountains.

On the basis of such successes, researchers are focusing their work on acclimatizing not only apple but also pear, plum, grape and other species of fruit trees to the cold in Samjiyon City, Ryanggang Province.
