Story about WPK’s Flag and Emblem

The red flag of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), which is proud of the longest record of the 80-year-long history among the ruling socialist parties, carries the emblem of a hammer, sickle and brush.

The WPK’s flag and emblem are associated with the immortal exploits of President Kim Il Sung who developed our Party into the strong one which has taken deep roots among the masses of working people.

One July day in 1946, the President summoned relevant officials and told them that the party flag had to be made to let our people and the world people correctly understand what kind of party it was.

Later, the President evaluated the drafts of the Party’s flag and pointed out mistakes. He said that the Party’s flag should be the red one carrying the emblem of a hammer and sickle symbolizing the workers and farmers and a brush symbolizing the working intellectuals, reflecting the unity of the popular masses.

Then, the work for creating designs of the Party’s flag and emblem was launched simultaneously.

The President said that the Party’s emblem should represent the working class, farmers and working intellectuals and it would show symbolically that it is a united party of the masses of working people.

Estimating again the adapted design of the Party’s flag, the President clearly indicated that the lines of demarcation for helves of a hammer and sickle and a brush stem should be drawn so that everyone could know the order of their places.

Like this, thanks to the President’s deep attention and energetic guidance, our Party’s emblem, which is peculiar and perfect in its ideological content and formative arts, was born in the world and the WPK’s flag has been the banner of victory and glory since then.
