National Intangible Cultural Heritage-Jotae Manufacturing Technique

Jotae is one of excellent national instruments of our country with a long history.

It was first used in the period of Koguryo Kingdom and became an important melodic instrument in Korean traditional music through the development of history.

Jotae is composed of main pipe, coupling pipe, finger holes and mouthpiece.

Jotae widely used among the people from ancient times has been reformed into three types of jotae, high-note jotae and middle-note jotae to preserve the characteristics unique to jotae and play contemporary music skillfully.

Reformed jotae is made of birch and palisander, instead of bamboo.

Jotae is an important instrument producing elegant and plaintive tones of national character and used in playing combined orchestral music, solo, ensemble and undertone.

The manufacturing technique of jotae, a national instrument, was registered as one of the national intangible cultural heritages in 2017.
