Historic Monument Depicting Heroic Mettle of Korean People

It has been 65 years since the Statue of Chollima was erected on Mansu Hill.

The Statue of Chollima towering high as a historic monument representing the heroic mettle of Korean people is the eternal symbol of Juche Korea.

A lot of people across the country recollect with deep emotion far-sighted acumen, uncommon artistic genius and energetic leadership of President Kim Il Sung who perfected the Statue of Chollima, the one and only, as a symbol of Juche Korea, a monument of the times representing the heroic mettle of Korean people.

In April 1959, while giving field guidance at the construction site of the youth park in the then Kyongsang-gol of Moran Hill, the President instructed to build a monument symbolic of Chollima era on Mansu Hill, saying that it would be good to portray the statue with a horse.

The President took all necessary measures for the erection of the Chollima Statue though he was very busy with all state affairs.

On November 17, 1959, the President saw all designs of the statue presented by sculptors. When inspecting a design depicting three horses, he pointed out that he couldn’t notice which horse was the main one and indicated in detail the ways for depiction, saying that it would be good to depict only one horse with a man and a woman on its back on behalf of the people from all walks of life.

In March the next year the President saw a miniature of the statue and suggested making a model of exactly the same size as the real one to heed the voice of the people as it was the monument symbolic of the Chollima era.

The sculptors made a mock-up in less than a month and put it up on the spot with two opinion books below it.

Upon receiving the news about the construction of the Statue of Chollima, people from all walks of life came to Mansu Hill and vied with others in writing their candid opinions. One thing in common among those opinions written on the voluminous book was that the statue looked a little small.

In June 1960, the President again inspected the model of the statue.

Saying that it had looked a little small when he saw on his journey of field guidance at regions a few days before, the President taught the sculptors to enlarge the statue twice the size of the model.

Like this, the Statue of Chollima could be erected magnificently in the center of Pyongyang.

On April 15, 1961, the President, who energetically led the construction of the statue with far-sighted acumen and rare artistic talent, attended the unveiling ceremony of the statue. That day he highly appreciated the sculptors and had a souvenir photo taken with them.

Our people who significantly greeted the 114th birth anniversary of the President and the 65th anniversary of the erection of the Statue of Chollima are proudly looking back upon the past days when we have grown up to be heroic people and Chollima riders under the loving care of the outstanding leader and are filled with ardent zeal for displaying to the full the Korean people’s dauntless spirit and wisdom in the ongoing struggle for attaining the new long-term objectives set forth by the Ninth Party Congress by faithfully upholding the leadership of the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Un.
