Yaksu-ri Mural Tomb, Historical Heritage

The Yaksu-ri mural tomb, located in Yaksu-ri, Kangso District, Nampho Municipality, the Koguryo mural tomb dating back to the beginning of the fifth century, is one of valuable historical and cultural heritages of our people.

Mural paintings of the tomb were first marked with contour lines before being colored.

The inner chamber has pictures related to the indoor life of the masters of the tomb and pictures of four guardians (blue dragon, white tiger, phoenix and snake-tortoise).

Its front chamber has pictures depicting a procession of a large scale, hunting, a horse and a carter, mill, kitchen and others on its wall.

The hunting picture portrays a chaser, a hunter shooting with a bow and an animal wounded from an arrow. So it makes people feel as if they were seeing the scene of hunting with their own eyes.

Figure and genre paintings and pictures of four guardians on the wall of the Yaksu-ri mural tomb are of great significance in explaining the course of transformation of Koguryo’s history and culture and Koguryo mural tombs.
