Historic Event Which Brought About Dramatic Turn in Destiny of Our Women

80 years have passed since the Law on Sex Equality was promulgated.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality, all the people across the country extend boundless gratitude to the peerlessly great men who made our women lead a genuine life.

July 30, 1946 was one of the ordinary days in the country’s history.

However, nobody had imagined that this day would be recorded in the history of the country as a day noteworthy in the history of our revolution, an eventful day when a dramatic turn was effected in the destiny of our women.

That day, the eleventh session of the provisional people’s committee established at the liberated country was held in Pyongyang under the guidance of President Kim Il Sung.

The President appeared at the platform with a beaming face and declared the session open. Then he said that he was going to enact a law on sex equality.

Presently, resounded over the venue of the meeting was the excited voice of the secretary-general of the provisional people’s committee reading the draft law on sex equality at the proposal of the President.

The draft law comprised of nine articles clarifying in detail that women were provided with the same rights as men in all realms of social life including politics, economy and culture greatly touched the participants.

In retrospect, the President made painstaking efforts to provide our women with genuine freedom, emancipation and complete equality.

As he keenly felt that men’s strength alone is not at all enough to successfully propel the revolution and construction, the President set it as a task of woman emancipation in the Ten-Point Programme of the Association for the Restoration of the Fatherland to ensure human equality irrespective of sex, give better social treatment to women and respect their personality.

The President saw to it that the women’s union was first founded among social organizations after liberation.

When enforcing the Agrarian Reform, he made sure that women were distributed the land with the same rights as men and when carrying out the Labor Law, he saw that women were specially protected in working life and social insurance programs enforced.

The President personally drew up a draft law on sex equality with ardent desire to totally rid women of feudal conventionalities and maltreatment, thus bringing them up as revolutionaries shouldering the building of a new country.

On the historic day, the President declared that the Law on Sex Equality was carried with a unanimous approval.

The promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality was a historic event that freed our women from feudal maltreatment and contempt and made them revolutionaries reliably pushing one of the two wheels of the revolution, and a powerful declaration heralding a greater victory of the revolution to be achieved by their vigorous struggle.

Upon the news of the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality, our women were moved to tears and shouted at the top of their voice "Hurrah for the Promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality!", "Long Live General Kim Il Sung!"

Indeed, the promulgation of the Law on Sex Equality was the law of love which could be set forth only by the President who made devoted efforts for letting all our people enjoy the happiest life with independent dignity.

The great honor of Korean women the President and Chairman Kim Jong Il took care of and put forward with fervent love and affection throughout their life is shining more brilliantly thanks to the respected Comrade General Secretary Kim Jong Un.

The future of Korean women advancing under the leadership of the respected Comrade General Secretary will be bright and rosy forever.
