Pipha Seal Registered as Natural Monument
Recently, the Pipha seal was registered as a natural monument in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In Rason City, there is a cape named after pipha (Korean mandolin) for its appearance. Cape Pipha is rich in marine products and serves as a habitat of seals. The Pipha seal is 1.5 to 2 meters long, weighs 120 to 150 kilograms and inhabits Cape Pipha from spring and autumn every year, feeding on fish and cephalopod like octopus and squid. As the Pipha seal was registered as natural monument, its protection came to be carried out amid national concern. The protection of endangered and rare species like useful animals has been brisk in the DPRK from long ago.
