The DPRK has lots of natural monuments.
Among them is an elephant rock over the cliff in Monggumpho, a scenic spot in the West Sea of Korea.
Its shape is attributable to the sea abrasion of quartz porphyry dating back to the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era together with the weathering that happened along the vertical joint faces.
The rock is 15 metres high with its trunk part 3 metres around.
In high tide, the rock reminds of an elephant drinking the sea water.
The rock of peculiar shape adds to the charm of the scenic lagoon, in combination with the beauty of the seaside cliff and clean seawater.
The natural monument is preserved well under the Party’s policy of conserving national heritage.
