The Songbul Temple is on Mt Jongbang in Sariwon City, North Hwanghae Province. The temple shows the architecture of the Koryo period.
The Songbul Temple was visited by President
The temple was built in 898 and there are the main building Kuknak(paradise) Hall and attached buildings, a five-storied pagoda and a monument.
The main building was rebuilt in 1376 and it was destroyed by the brutal bombings of the U.S. imperialists during the Korean War. And it was rehabilitated in 1955. The five-storied pagoda in front of the Kuknak Hall is one of the Koryo period.
The wooden building Ungjin Hall which was rebuilt in 1327 is a simple and plain building, but its architectural style and the art of red-and-blue painting show well the characters in the Koryo period.
The monument was built in 1727 and its inscription reads that the Songbul Temple is a large one with a big bell, dozens of buildings, a hermitage, a pagoda and over a thousand of monks.
The Songbul Temple is a precious historic site showing the architecture of the middle ages of our country.
