Phyongan Province is alongside with the West Sea of Korea and has flat and mountainous areas. The region produces a large number of grains, meat, fish, vegetables, wild edible greens, etc.

From olden times, those people in the region make well flour foods such as buckwheat noodles, mung-bean pancake and nochi(rice-cake) and roast of beef-ribs, sausage and kimchi.

The foods of the region are properly salted.

In the region there are different kinds of noodles including buckwheat noodles, tadpole-shaped noodles and chopped noodles.

Those people in the region like rice-cakes and there are various kinds of rice-cakes such as rice-cake stuffed with bean jam, shellfish-shaped rice-cake and tail-shaped rice-cake.

Among the fish dishes in the region are dishes of croaker, ray, king crab and helice tridens.

Broiled eel, steamed carp and pickled shrimps are famous in the reaches of the Amnok, Chongchon and Taedong rivers.

Bean sprouts kimchi and eggplant kimchi are peculiar to the region.

The typical liquor in the region is Kamhong-ro(liquor) which is red, sweet and clear.

Those people in Phyongan Province who are brave, enterprising and generous like Obukjaengban(noodles in flat vessel), beef-rib soup, seasoned rice rolled in kimchi, etc. and prepare a table elegantly.
