Ryongwang Pavilion, Scenic Beauty of Pyongyang

History 2024.3.15.

There are scenic spots and places of historic interest on the bank of the Taedong River flowing with time-honored history of our nation, which show wisdom and talents of our ancestors.

Among them is Ryongwang Pavilion, a scenic beauty of Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.

Ryongwang Pavilion was built with the Walled City of Pyongyang in the period of Koguryo and later reconstructed several times.

The present one was rebuilt in 1670.

The pavilion, which has been called the "most beautiful pavilion" and "Manhwa Pavilion" from olden times for its beautiful scenery, arouses the admiration of the visitors on account of its superior architecture and graceful landscape of the surroundings.

Its exterior is fantastic as it consists of two hip-saddle roofs with ridges and in particular, its handrails and girders painted with red and blue of silk pattern are beautiful.

And there are also a calligraphic sign board reading "the most beautiful place in the world" and a board on which the verses were written by Kim Hwang Won, a famous poet during Koryo Dynasty in praise of the Pyongyang’s superb scenic beauty.

The pavilion was damaged by the U.S. brutal bombing during the last Fatherland Liberation War but it has been splendidly restored to the original state thanks to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on protecting the national heritage. It serves as a national treasure and a cultural resort of the people.
