Koguryo Tomb Murals Painted in Three Tombs in Kangso

History 2024.4.24.

Koguryo Kingdom, a powerful state that existed for about one thousand years, left a lot of superior cultural heritages.

Among them are the murals in the Three Tombs in Kangso with significance of national treasure.

The tombs are situated in Sammyo-ri of Kangso District, Nampho Municipality.

Those form a group of tombs gathering in one place, thus calling them "the three tombs in Kangso."

The murals in the tombs have been widely known to the world for the most excellent ones among the mural tombs dating back to Koguryo Kingdom.

The murals can be seen in the tombs in big and middle sizes and their main theme is the picture of four guardians (blue dragon, white tiger, phoenix and snake-tortoise) meaning the gods in charge of the east, west, south and north.

Nowadays, the Three Tombs in Kangso and Koguryo tomb murals have been well preserved as the precious cultural heritages showing national superiority thanks to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on protecting the national heritage.
