Mt Paektu Biosphere Reserve covers Mt Paektu and the vast area around it.

Since the area of Mt Paektu was set as the Mt Paektu Plant Reserve in April Juche 35 (1946), it has been preserved under the care of the state. The area was listed as a World Network of Biosphere Reserves by the UNESCO in April Juche 78(1989).

In the area there are strata of various periods ranging from the lower-Proterozoic era to the Cenozoic era. The geology and topography of Mt Paektu, formed by several times of volcanic eruption and its evolution and development, and plants, animals, Lake Chon, etc. present a peculiar natural environment rare to be seen not only in the DPRK but also in other regions of the world.

Mt Paektu Biosphere Reserve in the highest zone of the DPRK has various kinds of plants according to climatic zones as well as lots of animals, birds and other vertebrates and invertebrates acclimated to severe climate and geological and geographical surroundings that remind one of a natural zoo.

The work for protecting biodiversity has been positively conducted in Mt Paektu Biosphere Reserve under the great interests of the state.
