Mt Kuwol Biosphere Reserve in the DPRK covers Mt Kuwol, a beauty spot of the Korean West Sea, and vast areas including the seashore around it.

The area of Mt Kuwol was registered as a World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO (the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization) in October Juche 93 (2004).

Mt Kuwol consists of big and small queer peaks like the main peak Sahwang Peak and Asa Peak.

In the area, there are many historical relics such as the Tangun Pavilion where Tangun, the ancestral father of our nation, cultivated his courage and the Woljong Temple with a history of more than 1 000 years.

Nearly 800 species of plants, including pine, oak, chestnut, maple and other high trees, shrubs and vines, grow at the biosphere reserve. Among them are over 200 species of edible herbs and medical plants like broad bellflower, Schisandra chinensis and Aster scaber.

Inhabiting there are over 200 kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes like water-deer, wild pig, pheasant, scops owl and buzzard.

In the biosphere reserve 20-odd species of threatened plants, including Gymnostemma pentaphylla and Forsythia densiflora grow and 30-odd species of threatened animals like black stork and Grus japonensis were observed.

The biodiversity in Mt Kuwol Biosphere Reserve has been positively preserved thanks to the nature conservation policy of our Party and state.
