Mt Chilbo has been called "Hambuk Kumgang" from olden times for the spectacular beauty of its mountains and valleys, dense forest and fantastic sea scenery.

Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve covers a vast area bounding the East Sea of Korea in the east, Kilju-Myongchon Graben in the west, Orang and Hwasong rivers running into the Bay of Kyongsong in the north and Hwadae River in the south.

Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve was registered as a World Network of Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in June Juche 103(2014).

In the reserve, more than 820 species of higher plants grow and 270 kinds of vertebrate animals inhabit.

Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve serves as an important storehouse of gene diversity with 130-odd medical herbs like Armillaria, famous mushroom in MtChilbo, and plants and animals of high economic value and academic significance.

There are more than 20 threatened species of plants like Celtis edulis and Tilia ovalis and 30-odd threatened kinds of animals like Tadorna cristata, Falco cherrug and Emberiza jankowskii in the reserve.

Also, there are many historical relics and remains showing the long history of Korea and natural monuments in the reserve.

The reserve houses more than 160 beauty spots like the Couple Rock, Ryemun Rock and myriad-shaped peaks and the Hwangjin Hot Spring.

Now Mt Chilbo has become more beautiful and the work for preserving biodiversity has been positively conducted thanks to the deep interests of the Party and state.
