Mt Kumgang is a pride of our country and world famous scenic spot.
Mt Kumgang is a collection of beautiful natural sceneries as it has natural beauties of mountains, valleys, plateaus, landscapes, lakes, sea and coastal scenes.
Mt Kumgang has several names such as Phungak, Kaegol, Sangak, Sonsan and Pongrae.
The main peak of Mt Kumgang is Piro Peak and there are more than a hundred high peaks in the mountain. It has a lot of mysterious rocks and cliffs like Samson Rock and Kwimyon Rock and valleys, 20-odd observatories including Manggun Rock and Paegun Rock, and Kumgang Gate, Sujong Gate, Hanul Gate and other natural rock gates and many natural caves like Kumgang Cave and Podok Cave.
About 2 000 plants grow in Mt Kumgang. Among them over 1 000 species are garden plants and 100-odd species are indigenous plants.
In particular, Pentastina rupicola (Kumgang Kuksu tree), Keumkangsania asiatica and other out-of-the-way plants are preserved as living monuments.
Numerous wild animals, fishes and birds inhabit the mountain enhancing its natural scenery. Phoxinus kumgangensis and Korean terrapin of Outer Kumgang are preserved and propagated as living monuments.
Mt Kumgang consists of Outer Kumgang, Inner Kumgang, Sea Kumgang and Pyol Kumgang.
From old times, out people have regarded scenery of Mt Kumgang as the best one in the world and named the famous mountains in different parts of the country after "Kumgang" like Mt Jangsu (Hwanghae Kumgang), Mt Chilbo (Hambuk Kumgang) and Mt Soksung (Uiju Kumgang).
