History 2024.6.19.
The Chilsong Gate was built in the mid-6th century when Koguryo (the first feudal state in the national history) fortified the Wall City of Pyongyang, and it was constructed as the northern gate of the inner walls of Pyongyang.
The present one was rebuilt in the 18th century.
The name of Chilsong is derived from the Great Bear, so it means a northern gate.
The gate is in a position difficult for the enemies to attack, but favorable to beating back the enemies.
When the Kitan aggressors invaded our country, our ancestors exterminated the enemy en masse at the gate.
The Chilsong Gate is a valuable historic site which shows the high architecture of our ancestors.
It was repaired several times, and during the Fatherland Liberation War, it was severely damaged by the US invaders’ barbarous bombing raids.
Now, the Chilsong Gate is kept in its original state thanks to our Party’s policy on protecting the national heritage.
