Research Findings Conducive to Children’s Healthcare

Teachers and researchers of Pyongyang University of Medicine clarified the main characteristics of the intensity of solar ultraviolet radiation in our country and the effect of its application, thus establishing a scientific sunbathing method which can help improve children’s health.

The research group clarified in a scientific way the characteristics of the intensity of solar ultraviolet radiation and standard of the minimum amount of erythema due to solar ultraviolet rays according to latitude, age, gender and month.

On this basis, they rationally set the time for starting and increasing insolation and the maximum endurance of sunbathing, and adopted them to day-care centers.

Ultraviolet rays play a significant role in preventing and curing rachitis, a common disease among children under five and in growing them tall.

For this reason, the research group of the university pushed ahead with the studies to analyze the main characteristics of the intensity of solar ultraviolet radiation in different regions of our country one by one and clarify the effect of its application.

After numbers of researches, they managed to find out a new application method with which to ensure the efficiency of rachitis prevention, physical growth promotion and effectiveness in body training on a high level, without using drugs like Vitamin D-calcium pills.

Consequently, "Guide to Standard of Minimum Amount of Erythema Due to Solar Ultraviolet Rays for Children under Five in Our Country" was made and distributed to day-care centers across the country and a guarantee for taking care of children’s health in a more scientific way was provided.

Their research findings have been registered as a national sci-tech success.

New Medicine Developed by Bioengineering Technique

Researchers of the public health sector achieved success in developing antineoplastic medicines by the advanced biological engineering technique.

The latest trend in treating cancer patients is to use the immunotherapy, which has been newly developed in the 21th century, as well as the surgical operation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

The researchers of the Antibody Engineering Institute and the Tumour Institute under the Academy of Medical Science and the Breast Tumour Institute of the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital developed a new vaccine for cancer treatment and are introducing it into the clinical units across the country.

Through the clinical trials, they proved that the medicine can be used in treatment for various cancers and is also effective in treatment for inoperable cancer.

Many preventive and curative medical organs including the Samjiyon City Hospital and the North Hwanghae Provincial Maternity Hospital achieve good results in their treatment by widely introducing it.

Now, the researchers put efforts into widening the range of its applications and developing more advanced bionic products.
