Taedong Gate, Historical Relic

History 2024.7.10.

The Taedong Gate stands on the bank of River Taedong in Taedongmun-dong of Central District, Pyongyang Muncipality.

It was built in the mid-6th century as the eastern gate of the inner walls of Pyongyang. The present gate was rebuilt in 1635.

The gate constitutes of granite terrace and the two-storeyed pavilion.

Height of the gate is 19 meters. The terrace is 26.3 meters long, 14.25 meters wide and 6.5 meters high. There is an arch in the center of the terrace.

The two-storeyed pavilion looks grandiose and dignified.

The Taedong Gate has two plaques: "Taedong Gate" and "Upho Pavilion."

The word "Upho" means that one can scoop up water of the River Taedong with hands on the upper storey of the gate and it reflects the characteristics of beautiful natural scenery of the Taedong Gate. That’s why the Taedong Gate was also called "Upho Pavilion."

The Taedong Gate, a big one of castle gates of the walled city of Pyongyang, played an important role in defence of the walls. It conveys our people’s resolute resistance spirit and bloody stories against aggressors.

During the Korean War the Taedong Gate was severely destroyed due to the barbarous bombing of the US imperialists; however, it was restored to normal thanks to our Party’s policy on protecting the national heritage.

Now, the Taedong Gate instills the national pride into our people’s minds.
