Culture 2024.7.15.

Embroidery of our country has a long tradition.

From old times Korean women who are gentle outwardly but strong-minded have liked embroidery reflecting their beautiful characters as well as their wisdom.

According to historical records, Korean embroidery originated and developed from the period of Ancient Korea and it was well known in its neighbor countries for its artistic skill and beauty.

Korean women have embroidered flowers, birds, landscape, animals, etc. for decorating formal dresses, wrappers for quilts, handkerchiefs and others.

Now Korean embroidery with a long history and tradition commands the admiration of people for its magnificence, nobility and vividness and delicateness in figures.

Korean embroidery has been further developed in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The Pyongyang Embroidery Institute is a center for developing our traditional embroidery, which was built on the picturesque bank of the River Pothong under the wise leadership of the peerlessly great men who paid deep attention to the development of the country’s national embroidery.

The institute, famous at home and abroad, creates hand- or machine-embroideries depicting images of persons, landscape, animals and others on the grounds of the excellent Korean painting.

Many hand-embroidery techniques developed by the institute were registered as intangible heritages of the DPRK.

Korean embroidery is developing day by day thanks to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on protecting national heritages.
