DPRK Social Scientists Prove Building Period of Tudaedong Fort

History 2024.12.11.

Scholars in the sector of social science of the DPRK proved that the Tudaedong Fort in Ryonghyon-ri, Suan County of North Hwanghae Province, was built in the period of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277 - A.D. 668).

The plane shape of the fort looks like a bottle gourd, and a total distance around the walls is 1 500 meters.

The fort was built on the mountain slope with well-trimmed basalt stones in the method of one-side building.

The basalt stones are typical of the Koguryo period with a convex front and round four corners. From bottom to the third layer, a step-wise lower part of the wall was made, and from above it the upper stones were arranged in tiers. The quadrangular pyramid-shaped stones at the bottom of the wall were covered with rubbles to prevent them from coming out.

This is the peculiar method of building walls of Koguryo.

The red tiles found during the survey are marked with a cord on the front and a pattern of hemp cloth on the back. They are the same with tiles discovered from the Taesongsan Fort.

This fact shows that the Tudaedong Fort is a typical one on a mountain of Koguryo.

Besides, the scholars deepened the study of historical data in relation to the designations of the surrounding areas of the fort, and proved that the fort was built by Koguryo in the early 5th century.
