Culture 2024.5.21.

Mt Myohyang Biosphere Reserve in the DPRK covers Mt Myohyang and vast areas around it.

Mt Myohyang Biosphere Reserve, which is called the treasure-house of biodiversity, was registered as a World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO (the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization) in May Juche 98 (2009).

From olden times, Mt Myohyang has been known to be a scenic spot in the DPRK for its queer physical aspect of a mountain and graceful landscape.

The mountain displays picturesque sceneries with sky-high peaks, deep valleys, high cliffs, crystal-like water, many waterfalls, thick woods and profound fragrance of flowers, twittering of birds, babbling of shallows, etc.

The biosphere reserve consists of diverse forest ecosystem.

More than 1 000 species of plants have been confirmed in it. Among them are plants of the temperate zone like pine, chestnut tree and Guercus mongolica, as well as subarctic zone and subalpine zone plants like Abies nephrolepis, birch, Pinus pumila and Sabina sargentii.

Inhabiting there are over 250 kinds of vertebrate animals including bear, antelope and pheasant.

20-odd species of threatened plants like wild insam and Gastrodia elata grow and nearly 30 kinds of threatened animals like musk deer have been observed there.

There are many natural monuments including the group of Rhododendron yedoense in Mt Myohyang and historical relics like the Pohyon Temple showing high architecture of our ancestors.

Mt Myohyang turned into a wonderful cultural resort of the people thanks to the noble patriotism of the peerlessly great men.

The work of preserving the biodiversity in Mt Myohyang Biosphere Reserve has been briskly conducted under the nature conservation policy of our Party and state.
